چکیده

We present in this paper a new kind of laserbased microphone device capable of detecting minute displacements of the microphone diaphragm, leading to drastically improved sensitivity in detecting the impinging pressure waves like acoustic waves and water waves over existing state-of-the-art laser and fiber-optic microphones. The drastically improved sensitivity in detecting diaphragm surface displacements of the novel laser microphone leads to niche applications including the photoacoustic detection of molecules and compounds with long standoff detection distances as well as highly sensitive technology for monitoring submarine activities. Preliminary experimental demonstration of the novel laser microphone technology is presented, validating the theoretical modeling that is also presented.

The advantage of using a diode laser instead of a Q-switched laser in photoacoustic imaging of tissues

Photoacoustic (PA) imaging of biological tissues using laser diodes instead of conventional Q switched pulsed systems provides an attractive alternative for biomedical applications. However, the relatively low energy of laser diodes operating in the pulsed regime, results in generation of very weak acoustic waves, and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the detected signals. This problem can be ...

Design and Application of a Photoacoustic Sensor for Monitoring the Laser Generated Stress Waves in Optical Fiber

Measurement of stress transients generated by a 400ns pulsed HF laser in an infrared fluoride glass fiber has been made using fast time – response piezoelectric film transducer. Acoustic signals up to 12 mV with frequencies ranging in megahertz generated by 21 mJ laser pulse when passed through the fiber axis in the linear region. It is shown that useful information such as onset of non - linea...

Laser diode photoacoustic detection in the infrared and near infrared spectral ranges.

A new technique for high resolution photoacoustic detection based on application of laser diodes has been developed. This method was tested and compared using identical photoacoustic instrumentation (cell and microphone) to study gas absorption in three different spectral regions, namely: the infrared range near 2100 cm(-1), CO and OCS fundamental band absorption; the ranges near 4200 and 4350 ...

A simple photoacoustic method for the in situ study of soot distribution in flames

of soot formation during combustion is a key step in developing soot reduction strategies [3, 4]. Optical measurement techniques are ideally suited for combustion environments because they generally cause negligible perturbation to the combustion process. One of the most widely used optical techniques for the study of particulate matter in flames is laser-induced incandescence (LII). Typical LI...
